Fire Drill and Lockdown Drill - 1/24/2020

Dear Mantua ES families:

Every school facility in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. A lockdown is a well-established procedure designed to protect students and staff members in a case in which there might be threats of violence within a school. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or are escorted to classrooms if they are in the halls, and all interior and exterior doors are closed and locked. Once the facility is rendered safe and students are accounted for, the school is returned to normal operation.

To implement this training, our school conducted a scheduled lockdown drill as well as a fire drill today.  I will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at Mantua Elementary School. If you have questions, please contact me. I appreciate your continued support in these matters.

Sincerely yours,

Nick Rousos

Nominations for Outstanding Teacher Awards

Dear Mantua Elementary School Community,

As you may know, every year Fairfax County Public Schools recognizes outstanding employees at all levels.  Once again this year, all schools in FCPS are encouraged to nominate an Outstanding Teacher, whose name will then go on to the pyramid level where a Pyramid Outstanding Teacher will be selected. Then each of the five Regions will select their Region Outstanding Teacher, who will serve as the finalists for the coveted Fairfax County Public Schools Outstanding Teacher Award.

Schools will also select an Outstanding New Teacher (a teacher within his or her first three years of teaching) and have the option of submitting nominees for the other school-based award categories: Outstanding Principal, Outstanding Leader (Assistant Principal), Outstanding Professional Employee (School Counselor, School-Based Technology Specialist, Social Worker, School Psychologist, Technology Support Specialist), and Outstanding Operational Employee (Office Staff, Instructional Assistant, Custodial Staff, Food Service Staff, Parent Liaison).  Nominations for Bus Driver will be processed through the Transportation department.  If you are interested in nominating a bus driver, please contact Julia Ruskin (contact information at the bottom of this email).

We are asking you, the Mantua ES parent and guardian community, to help us gather names for this process.   If you would like to nominate a Mantua staff member for any of the above awards, please go to and submit your nomination no later than Friday, November 15.  All responses will be kept confidential.  If you are nominating a staff member for the Outstanding Teacher or Outstanding New Teacher award, please address at least two of the following award criteria in your submission to Mr. Hang:

• Instills in students a desire to learn and achieve.
• Understands the individual needs of students, encourages their talents, and fosters their self-esteem.
• Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students
• Fosters cooperative relationships and engages with their colleagues and the community
• Demonstrates outstanding leadership

We are excited that we can recognize so many outstanding employees.   If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Richard Hang at  We would love to hear from you!
