The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.

English Language Arts
Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.
Goal: By June 2023, 100 % of all students will meet their growth target on iReady/VGA/PALs-K.
Implement ELA Shift 2 by aligning Tier 1 practices with evidence-based literacy instructional strategies and resources to explicitly teach word recognition strategies.
Ensure targeted literacy practice opportunities for every student and additional time for tier 2 and 3 instruction for students who need more practice.
Build understanding of evidence-based literacy practices with families.
ESSER III Mathematics Strategies
Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.
Goal: By June 2023, 100 % of all students will meet their growth target on iReady/VGA/EMAS.
Expand students' strategies and problem solving approaches in Tier 1 instruction through Instructional Shift 8 - From looking at correct answers toward looking for students' thinking.
Teachers design small group learning tasks to support tier 2 & 3 students (AVMR, ST Math, FCPS Intervention Materials) that target specific strategies or representations.
Build understanding of evidence-based math practices with families.
ESSER III Wellness Strategies
Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.
Goal: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, our school will implement and utilize Responsive Classroom routines and structures to support the development of emotional regulation, increasing schoolwide scores on the self-management topic on the SEL screener by 15%, from 46% to 61%.
Teachers engage in required Tier 1 Responsive Classroom practices schoolwide.
Develop all adults' foundational knowledge around the rationale for required practices.
Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals. These are shown below.
Portrait of a Graduate (POG)
Goal: By June 2023, 100% of teachers will demonstrate increased understanding of POG as reported on a staff survey, resulting in increased student understanding of POG attributes and skills.
Leveraging support specialists in the school, collaborative learning teams will understand how the attributes of POG relate to content.
Every teacher will make the POG attributes visible in the classroom so all students can access skill language
