Here at Mantua we care about your privacy and want to ensure that you are comfortable with the information provided to other Mantua families! The Opt Out window ends on October 1st. Questions, email directory@mantuapta.orghttps://mp.gg/r2-z3

Volunteers are the Backbone of the Basketball League

The league started almost 50 years ago and we believe it is the oldest operating, PTA-sponsored, school program in Virginia. Four division commissioners (one for each division) work directly with League Commissioner to coordinate volunteers, assign players to each division and operate the league.

Please consider donating your time by signing-up as a coach and referee to support this great league and help provide this amazing resource to our precious children.

No experience is required.

• Coaching: At least one parent is needed to coach each team. Coaching requires holding practices and preparing their team for weekly games.

• Referees: One parent from each team is required to referee a game each week (cannot be your child's game). The referees help make sure players are playing fairly and following the rules of basketball.

• High School Volunteers: High school students over the age of 15 may assist the league and can earn community service credit, but responsible adults who can manage emergencies should assist. Ask the commissioners if you have questions.

• Training: The league provides training opportunities for new and returning coaches at the beginning of each season. Seasoned coaches are always happy to help new coaches with any questions or techniques. The league also provides ongoing training and evaluation of referees to help improve knowledge of the game and rules and to ensure they are comfortable refereeing in different divisions.

Most league leaders started learning about basketball by volunteering for their own children as they entered the program. You can do it! Contact Eric Fleming at commissioner@mantuabasketball.org if you have any questions or would like to volunteer with Mantua PTA Basketball.

Mantua Drama Club Planning for 2021-22

The Mantua Drama Club will partner with Julie Johnston's iContact to create a theater experience for our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. We are offering a series of Fall Theater Workshops (including a final musical presentation, open to guests) and a Spring Musical production (hopefully Seussical, Jr. which is presented to the community).

Programming will take place after school until 5:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See the Handbook for the exact calendar. Please see the Drama Club Handbook for all the guidelines and details: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DaY8EB6IwY2WxzWGc-VLjNPzMa1a-HBdBcezp9e9qu4/edit?usp=sharing We are focused on developing new skills and giving everyone an opportunity to learn! Every student will either be able to participate in the Fall Workshop OR the Spring Musical, not both. On this form, you will tell us whether you are auditioning, but you can decide after the Audition Workshop if you'd like to continue as a Fall Workshop participant if not assigned to the Spring Musical cast. (See Page 4 in the Handbook for more information).

There will be no limit on the number of students that can register. We will allow everyone to register and if we are over enrolled, we will use a random draw lottery to place students. Our goal is to eliminate the stress of registering and give everyone an equal chance to participate in at least the Fall Workshop. We hope to have plenty of space to accommodate everyone interested!

IMPORTANT DATES:

Registration Open - Now to Sunday, September 12 at 8:00 PM.
Audition Workshop Tuesday, September 14th 5:30 - 7:00PM in the Gym Auditions will be organized in a workshop format where all students get a chance to shine in a low pressure, group setting. This workshop event will likely take place during an assigned a time slot in that time window. Anyone not able to attend can submit an alternate audition video by Sept 14th at 8pm, but please try to attend in person if possible. School Year 2021-2022 Bus Ridership Intent

Because of a serious shortage of school bus drivers, it is important that Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Office of Transportation Services plans the most efficient possible routes for the coming school year. Therefore, please respond to this survey to assist us in this planning. Submit a separate survey for each of your children enrolled in FCPS.

During the school year, changes to your intent can be made with your school's SIS operator if the need for transportation changes.

Please see your SIS ParentVue account if you are unsure of your student's ID number. https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps

Submit your response today, one for each child in your household enrolled in FCPS. Your immediate attention to this matter is appreciated. Eligible riders needing transportation may review student route assignment by accessing ParentVue any time after August 9th, or by contacting your transportation or school office. Additions and adjustments will be made weekly. All students eligible for transportation services will be provided transportation, even those whose parents did not complete this survey. This information is important for planning purposes only.

Mantua PTA News 2021, Mrs. Fernandez Farewell Issue

June 17, 2021 | Mrs. Fernandez Farewell

Mantua Elementary could not let our principal of 26 years leave quietly!  This past week saw our staff gather to recognize her with stories, tributes, hugs and a performance by our very own talented musicians. Following the staff gathering the community came out to wave and honk past the front of the school. The parade even included tractors and convertibles!  On Thursday morning, Rocky came to her doorstep for a special ride into school. On Friday, alongside staff in a longtime Mantua tradition she waved to our students as the busses pulled out for the start of summer break!

We thank you Mrs. Fernandez for your service and leadership at Mantua and wish you the best in your retirement!

Mantua ES Library Named in Honor of Mrs. Fernandez   Jan-Marie Fernandez

As we say goodbye to our amazing Principal, Jan-Marie Fernandez - we are naming the Professional and Parent Library in her honor. This space will carry on her passion for ongoing learning, and her commitment to bringing the latest research and best practices to Mantua.

This wonderful space will be set up with books and new subscriptions. It will also support staff development and guest speakers. This is made possible by a generous contribution by the Mantua PTA and its parent community.

June 8 (Tuesday): Virtual School, Primary Day.

June 9 (Wednesday): 6th Grade Ceremony, 10:30 am.

June 11 (Friday): Last Day of School, 2 Hour Early Release.

6th Grade Promotion

We are happy to announce that we will be recognizing Mantua's 6th grade students through an in-person promotion ceremony this year.

Adhering to the COVID-19 mitigation guidelines provided by FCPS for elementary schools, we have determined the plan for 6th grade promotion for the class of 2021. We are holding a “shine-only” outdoor event at 10:30am on June 9. Though outside, we must still adhere to gathering maximums and social distancing.

FCPS currently limits the number of people we can have on campus. Therefore, each student is strictly limited to 2 guests. As part of the COVID guidelines, all guests and students must be able to answer “no” to all of the questions on the FCPS Health Screening form found here http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/Mont_Comp/InPersonEvaluations.pdf#xml=http://search.fcps.edu/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/webinator/search/xml.txt?query=health+screening&pr=fcpsnet1&prox=sentence&rorder=750&rprox=750&rdfreq=500&rwfreq=500&rlead=500&sufs=1&order=r&cq=&id=609c81df7 , wear a mask, and maintain a 6’ distance from other guests who do not share their home address.

Due to capacity guidelines and mitigation requirements, no guests may enter the building with their children. In-person students will arrive and proceed to their classrooms in the Modular Building as they do on a typical day. Virtual students will report to the Modular Building by 9:45am and be ushered to a classroom.

No more than 2 guests per student are allowed, guests will assemble on the grass around the blacktop by the playground. The entire blacktop is reserved for the event, there will be no seating provided for guests. All 6th graders, virtual or in-person and in attendance or not, will have their name called by Mrs. Fernandez alphabetically by classroom teacher. Following the ceremony, there will be photo opportunities with backdrops for students and families. Following the photo opportunities, virtual students will leave with their guest(s). In-person students may also check out and leave with their guests but are also able to remain in their classrooms for the rest of the school day.

We look forward to seeing you on June 9, 2021 at 10:30 am for this event, guests may assemble on the grass surrounding the blacktop as early as 9:45am. Please make sure not to block the driveways of Mantua ES’ neighbors when you park.

Virtual and Leaving Early Student Laptop Returns (check-ins)

Mantua has begun accepting laptop returns. Those families with computers at home that the student can still use to remain in school until the last day.  If a family knows they are leaving the school before the last day, they can turn in laptops by appointment before June 11th, using the chart below.

Before returning the laptop wipe down all items with a damp, but not dripping disinfectant wipe (laptop, power adaptor, mouse).

In order to receive credit for checking in the device you will need to return the student's laptop, FCPS power adaptor, and in some instances mouse. Students will keep their laptop sleeves for use next year. If you do not return the laptop and correct power adaptor by June 14th they will receive a charge on their student’s account.

Students in the SOAR program will keep their laptops/power adaptors, but we still want to see their laptops and power adaptors the day the rest of the students check theirs in so we know they have it.

The first schedule is for individual students who are leaving early or can attend school until June 11th without needing their FCPS laptop. Any virtual student can turn in their equipment June 11th from 5-8pm and if they are not going to be here on the 14th.

Please email pjdunfee@fcps.edu for an appointment.

It is important that all devices be checked in by June 14th in order for your student's account not to be charged.

Virtual Author Visits

Our 3rd & 4th grade classes will welcome local author John Gallagher on Tuesday, June 1st. Mr. Gallagher is the author of the Max Meow series. John Gallagher is the art director of the National Wildlife Federation’s Ranger Rick magazine and has been drawing comics since he was five!

Our 6th graders will have the opportunity to meet author Keir Graff on Tuesday, June 8th! Mr. Graff is the author of several popular titles, including The Other Felix, The Matchstick Castle, and The Phantom Tower. His latest release, The Tiny Mansion, follows a middle schooler who is forced to spend her summer off-the-grid with her family in a tiny home!

Students will enjoy a presentation and Q&A sessions.

You can support these authors AND the Mantua Elementary Library, but shopping at our book fair here! https://www.bookwormcentral.com/school-online-store.php?id=00324020-DDCE-4FF5-9541-F78F3A71E167&pro_id=&school_code=mantua

6th Grade Recognition Event

The 6th Grade Recognition Event will be held on Wednesday, June 9th. We are hoping you can help get out some very important information.

Each student is allowed no more than (2) guests, and this event will be a SHINE only event. In the case of rain, the event will be an all virtual event (more info to come on that if it rains). The event will take place on the blacktop area between the modulars and the playground. The final details of this are still being worked through, so be on the lookout for that communication from Admin.

Below is the link for the Sign Up Genius. We are hoping you can share this with your classes. Unlike years past, we are unable to have a party following the Recognition Event. Virtual students will be invited to attend the ceremony at the school but will need to leave prior to lunch in order to follow the FCPS lunch guidelines. Following the outdoor event, in person students will have lunch/movie indoors....again, no outdoor activities this year.

6th Grade Baby Pictures!

For this year's 6th grade recognition celebration I will be creating a slideshow of baby photos featuring kids from all classes. Teachers will be able to show the video in class and share with their virtual students, and may be posted to Google Classroom as well. It's easy to participate and we hope that you will!

Here's how to do it:

  1.  Email a baby photo of your kiddo to jenna.vonelling@gmail.com by JUNE 4TH.
  2. Higher resolution is better. If you are sending from your phone, choose "large" or "original size" if given the option. Email me if you have any questions.
  3. Be sure to tell me in your email your child's full name and what class they are in.
Mrs. Fernandez Farewell Parade

As many of you know, Mrs. Fernandez is retiring this year. Let's send her off in style and show her the appreciation she so deserves. Mark your calendars for Monday, June 7th. There will be a parade in front of Mantua Elementary School beginning at 3:45pm. You can walk, drive or bike through the parade.  Feel free to bring a note, picture or any memento that you'd like to give to Principal Fernandez. All are invited to join.

Let's show Mrs. Fernandez how much she is truly loved by all. Please spread the word to the community and Mantua alumni as well! Any questions, contact Meri Farling at merifarling@hotmail.com.

Mrs. Fernandez Tribute Video

After 26 years of serving Mantua Elementary as Principal, our leader Mrs. Jan-Marie Fernandez is retiring. While we’re lucky to still have her as our neighbor she will greatly be missed at our school. We invite past and present students and families to take a minute and record a quick message. Let’s show Ms. Fernandez some Mantua love!

Here is how to participate:

  1. Go to our tribute video website
  2. Click on the "Record/Upload Video" big red button
  3. Record your video from your computer or phone (TIP: If you are recording the video from your phone make sure to hold your phone HORIZONTAL!)

You can also record messages as groups or as a family! Example messages can include:

  • “Hi Mrs. Fernandez, remember me? Jane Doe from 1997? Good luck with everything!”
  • “Thank you Mrs. Fernandez for everything”
  •  “Congrats on retiring we’ll miss you from the Doe family”

If you have a fun memory please share that too! Make sure to say your name and the year you left! Deadline to submit videos is Friday, June 4.

Summer Garden Volunteers Needed

The Discovery Garden is in full swing and in an effort to keep everything healthy and looking its best the Garden Committee is seeking volunteers to help with occasional watering, weeding and general clean-up over the next few months. Temperatures are on the rise so we just want to ensure happy and hydrated plants over the summer break so there's a beautiful display to greet everyone back next fall. No gardening experience is required and instructions about needed tasks, supplies, etc...will be provided. If interested, please contact Karin Hudson at garden@mantuapta.org.

Virtual and Leaving Early Student Laptop Returns (check ins)

Hi Mantua families!

Below is the schedule for Mantua ES virtual/leaving early students to return their laptops, power adaptors and mice.  In person students have a different schedule which will be communicated by teachers.

We will begin receiving any virtual student’s laptop starting on June 4th, if those families have computers at home that the student can still use to remain in school until the last day.  If a family knows they are leaving the school before the last day, they can also turn their laptops in before June 11th, by appointment using the chart below.  Please wipe down all items with a damp, but not dripping disinfectant wipe (laptop, power adaptor, mouse).

We will need the student’s laptop, FCPS power adaptor, and in some instances mouse, in order to receive credit for checking the device in. Students will keep their laptop sleeves for use next year.   If they do not return the laptop and correct power adaptor by June 14th they will receive a charge on their student’s account.

If students are in the SOAR program they will be keeping their laptops/pwr adaptors, but we still want to see their laptops and power adaptors the day the rest of your students check theirs in so we know they have it.

The first schedule is for individual students who are leaving early or can attend school until June 11th without needing their FCPS laptop. Any virtual student can come on June 1th from 5-8pm and turn in their equipment if they are not going to be here on the 14th.  Please email pjdunfee@fcps.edu for an appointment.

It is important that all devices be checked in by June 14th in order for your student's account not to be charged.  Thanks for your assistance.

Ms. Dunfee,

School Based Technology Specialist
