Great Garden Clean-Up Day – Thank You

The PTA Garden Committee and the Mantua Get2Green Team would like to thank all the families who were able to join us last weekend to help clean out the gardens and get them ready for winter. We had a fantastic turnout and it was wonderful to see so many students and parents digging in and getting their hands dirty!

We cleaned out the beds in the Discovery Garden near the playground, planted over a dozen new perennials and spring bulbs and laid down fresh mulch.

We really appreciate everyone who came out to help, enjoy the great outdoors and volunteer to improve our school’s habitat. We have a caring and engaged community!

Scouting For Food!

Cub Scout Pack 1533 will be collecting non-perishable food items for donation on Saturday, November 9th. Please leave donations in bags/boxes at the end of your driveway by 9am on Saturday morning.

Reminder for Hosting Greener Class Parties!

Hello parents, room parents, and party coordinators. When planning your classroom party, please consider incorporating at least two or more of the following tips to save the environment and $$$ along the way:

  • Ask students to bring their own reusable water bottles.
    • Plastic water bottles are expensive, require a lot of resources to produce and transport, and can leach harmful chemicals in the water.
    • There are so many reusable bottles to reflect your child’s personality.
    • Mantua now has its own refillable water station to use!
  • Stick to finger foods!
    • Cut up fruit, chips, crackers and cheese.
    • Avoid using plastic utensils which do not degrade in landfills.
    • For something sweet, consider mini-cupcakes, popsicles or cookies.
  • Please do not use any Styrofoam products, which contain styrene and can cause adverse health effects.
    • Styrofoam is lightweight and floats, so over time a great deal of it has accumulated along coasts and waterways, becoming a large component of marine debris.
  • If you need plates, buy small compostable and biodegradable plates. You can find them on Amazon, and also earn $$$ for the school. (Info about Mantua’s Amazon program: http://mantuapta.org/#section_news, then scroll down to Passive Fundraising section.)
  • For activities, consider an outdoor event or using recyclable materials for craft projects.
  • Skip the plastic tablecloths and decorations, the kids will have fun either way!

Minimizing the amount of trash produced makes setup and cleanup much easier.

Don't Forget the Mantua Gardens Annual Fall Clean-Up is coming on November 10th!

Greetings, Friends of the Mantua Gardens! Autumn is here and along with the chillier temperatures and changing leaf colors comes a transition in the gardens.

As always, it's time to prepare our green spaces for winter rest and this year’s clean-up event will be held on Sunday, November 10 from 1-3 pm beginning in the Discovery Garden beds above the playground.

We will be cutting plants back, weeding, edging around the seating area and refreshing the mulch. We will also be planting some bulbs that will greet families with a pretty display in the early days of spring. We will be clearing out the old vegetable plants from the Learning Garden beds next to the white tent.

We welcome gardeners of all ability levels to join us as it’s a great way to get hands on experience and learn more about plant and vegetable gardening and our native plants. Children (with parents) are always encouraged to join in. Bulb planting is especially fun!

If you enjoy being outside on a lovely fall day, I hope you and your family will join us as long as you can on November 10.

If you’d like more details or have any questions, please contact Garden Committee Chair, Karin Hudson at [email protected] and check out our Facebook page, Mantua ES Garden Committee & Volunteers!

Room Parent - Send email reminders to class families about PTA events and fundraisers, communicate with parents to coordinate teacher gifts, help party coordinators plan seasonal class parties, this job can be done remotely.

Tuesday Folder Helper - Comes to the classroom on a weekly basis at a time coordinated with the teacher to stuff Tuesday folders that will go home with each student. Since this requires someone to come weekly, this position can be split between two parents who alternate weeks.

Party Coordinators - Coordinators get a set date and time from the teacher and coordinate games, crafts, snacks, etc. for the class, often soliciting the other class parents for supply donations and extra volunteer help.

Run for Rocky Fundraising goes through this Friday November 1st!

Mantua Gardens Annual Fall Clean-Up November 10th!

If you enjoy being outside on a lovely fall day I hope you and your family will join us as long as you can on November 10.

If you’d like more details or have any questions, please contact Garden Committee Chair, Karin Hudson at [email protected] and  check out our Facebook page, Mantua ES Garden Committee & Volunteers!

National Geography Bee Club Now Meeting!

Calling all students who love studying maps, traveling, or memorizing capital cities and flags! Our club is studying geography to prepare for the National Geography Bee.

We meet on Tuesdays after school in room 254, beginning October 1st. The club is open to all students grades 1-6, and each session includes quiz time, topic and country-specific study, and assigned research to prepare for the next meeting.

The Geography Bee is run by International Academic Competitions and has both individual and team competitions (to learn more about these, see the IAC website at https://www.iacompetitions.com/). We're mainly preparing for the individual competition, but we work as a team to learn from everyone's unique knowledge and improve our performance together.

Please contact Dan Rothfarb ([email protected]) if interested.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4AA9AC22A6FF2-mantua Classroom Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for classroom volunteers! (Room parents, Tuesday folder helpers, and party coordinators.) These are great opportunities to get to know your teacher better and to spend time in your kiddo’s classroom!

A brief description of the current volunteer opportunities is included below.

Can’t commit to one of these jobs? More opportunities will be posted throughout the year for various events and programs!

Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions.
-------------------------
Room Parent - Send email reminders to class families about PTA events and fundraisers, communicate with parents to coordinate teacher gifts, help party coordinators plan seasonal class parties, this job can be done remotely.

Note: the sign up link says kindergarten volunteers, but there is a tab at the top for each grade for the 2024-2025 school year.

Tuesday Folder Helper - Comes to the classroom on a weekly basis at a time coordinated with the teacher to stuff Tuesday folders that will go home with each student. Since this requires someone to come weekly, this position can be split between two parents who alternate weeks.

Enrichment Activities Kicked off this week!

Please make sure PUP is updated to indicate that your child will be staying after school!

Mantua ES uses Pick Up Patrol (PUP) for after-school dismissal. The PUP system must be updated for EVERY class day that your child will attend to make sure they get to the right place after school. Please also REMIND your child to stay after school on all scheduled class dates.

If PUP is not updated to show that your child is expected to attend Enrichment, the front office will assume that you would like your child to go home via the default dismissal plan in PUP and they will miss class.

See below for instructions on how to change a dismissal plan in PUP. Please contact the front office for assistance if needed.

  1. Open PUP and select "Change" on the bottom toolbar
  2. Select the first date of the scheduled activity
  3. Select your child's name
  4. Select “Plan”
  5. Select “After School Activity/Please specify activity/location”
  6. In the “More Info” section, input the name of the activity and the assigned room location found in the welcome email from Baroody Camps (you will receive this in the next few days)
  7. Select “Dates” and click on ALL of the scheduled dates for the after-school activity
  8. Select “Submit"

***Do not make Enrichment dismissal changes by clicking the “Default” button on the bottom toolbar of the home screen. A “Default Plan” is a yearlong plan based on your child’s more permanent dismissal plan and schedule. Default plans should not be changed for seasonal schedules. Doing so may result in errors in the dismissal instructions given to your child.***

National Geography Bee Club Coming Soon!

What is it?

This is a fun club for students in grades 1-6 to learn geography and prepare for the National Geography Bee competition.

Where and when do we meet?

Tuesday afternoons after school from 4:10 to 5:10 in room 254.

Who runs the geography bee?

International Academic Competitions runs three national competitions on the same days: the National Geography Bee, National History Bee, and National Science Bee. Students can participate in all three, but this club is dedicated to the Geography Bee.

How do I sign up for the geography bee?

Go to the IAC website (https://www.iacompetitions.com/) and follow the instructions to create an account and sign up for the online test. Students must pass the online test before signing up for a regional final, but there is no limit to the times you can attempt the test. There are numerous regional finals in the DC area throughout the year, and you can sign up for any one and more than one if you like (for a $49 fee per event). Top scorers at the regional finals are invited to sign up for the national finals in May (also for a fee).

Who are you?

I’m a Mantua parent, an editor at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and a big geography nerd! Coach Dan Rothfarb

What is the competition like?

There are individual and team competitions. The individual competitions consist of quiz show-style heats in which students try to buzz in first with a correct answer. A competitor can get up to five correct answers per heat, and there are bonus points for finishing early. High scorers in the regional finals are invited to the national finals in the spring. The team competition is an academic bowl-style contest held at the national finals.

We’ll be mainly preparing for the individual competition (with the option of adding the team competition, pending interest), but the students will support each other’s learning to represent Mantua as well as we can!

How will we prepare for the competition?

Our study sessions will include quiz (review) time, regional and country-specific study, and homework to prepare for the next meeting. Older students will help to mentor younger ones, and everyone will be invited to share their expertise with the group. Studying geography can be a lot of memorization, but memory works best when you’re having fun, so we’ll work together to make each meeting memorable!

How much does the club cost?

I’m asking parents to contribute $20 for materials at the start of the year. This will go toward printing materials and purchasing snacks.

How can I help?

Please let me know if you’d like to help plan or run any sessions! Geography is a huge subject, and the more perspectives we hear from, the better for everyone.

Should I tell a friend?

Yes!

Fall Enrichment Starts on Wednesday this Week

Mantua PTA has paired with Baroody Camps to bring you another exciting selection of classes! Classes will run 10/7-12/12. Fall registration begins at 10AM Wednesday September 18th and ends Wednesday September 25th at 11:59PM. See the flyer below for the schedule and a link to class descriptions. Mantua Elementary School (jumbula.com)

As you may know, one of the after school enrichment vendors who partners with Baroody Camps issued the following statement link regarding the recent arrest of an employee from one of their providers. In addition to multiple background checks, FCPS badging, and trainings, Mantua PTA will employ additional measures to ensure student safety:

All adult after school providers will be instructed by Baroody to use the teachers’ lounge restroom while on campus.

Providers will be reminded of the current mandatory buddy system that is in place for all students attending after-school enrichment programs who need to use the restroom.

An on-site enrichment coordinator is always on campus during enrichment to check attendance rosters, wait with students during late pickup, and is responsible for reporting to Baroody any behavior or other incidents that arise during after-school enrichment.

Additionally, Mantua PTA will have a PTA representative on-site every day for the first week of classes to ensure that all safety measures are being followed properly.

Please let us know if you have any further questions about the safety protocols by contacting the PTA enrichment coordinators at: [email protected]. We are excited to offer another season of enrichment programs!

Opt Out of Mantua Directory

Here at Mantua we care about your privacy and want to ensure that you are comfortable with the information provided to other Mantua families! Please complete this short form if you do NOT wish to be published in the Mantua PTA Online Student Directory.

The Mantua PTA Online Student Directory contains student names, teachers, parent names and email addresses of Mantua ES's families as well as some important school information. The information you provided to the school upon registration of your child(ren) will be used to create our directory. The majority of parents opt to include their family's information in the directory as it is a great resource for parents, students, and faculty throughout the school year, but we want each family to make that choice for themselves.

The Opt Out window ends on October 6th.

If you have questions, email [email protected].

Note: the sign up link says kindergarten volunteers, but there is a tab at the top for each grade for the 2024-2025 school year.

Mantua Drama Club Planning 2024-2025

We are excited to announce that Mantua Drama Club will once again partner with Julie Johnston's iContact to create a musical theater experience for our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students! We are thrilled that this year we will be doing two musicals, Aladdin KIDS in the fall and Frozen KIDS in the Spring.

We are also thrilled to be adding a SPRING WORKSHOP. This is also open to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. It will be held on Tuesday's starting in February. We had such high demand for the Drama program last year we are excited to add this as an option so that more kids may be exposed to Drama!

We highly encourage parents of interested students to join the parent information meeting on August 27th at 8pm. We will go through the schedule of both the fall and spring shows, the audition process, lottery, etc in great detail and will have time to answer all questions.
