Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Last week, the Aristocats Kids performance wowed audiences, showcasing the great talents of all the cast members. Behind the scenes, students appreciated the tireless dedication of the fabulous PTA Drama leaders who made this experience possible.

As the curtains closed on The Aristocats Kids, Mantua transitioned into celebrating Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week from May 6-10. We are so grateful for each and every staff member at Mantua. Throughout the week, the PTA showered Mantua's staff with delicious treats, showing gratitude for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks go to  all the volunteers whose efforts made this week a resounding success. The unwavering support of the PTA is deeply appreciated, as it underscores the vital role they play in uplifting and recognizing the contributions of our staff and teachers.

Amidst the appreciation festivities, Mantua hosted the 4th Grade Strings Spring Concert. Both the school-day performance and the evening showcase were met with excitement and applause. The event not only entertained but also inspired students to consider joining strings for the upcoming school year.

We wrapped up the week with the 23rd annual Raccoon Run on Saturday, May 11. There was a remarkable turnout, showcasing the unwavering support of our community for an important cause and raising cancer awareness. It was so much fun to spend time with the many students and families as we cheered on each runner!

We hope that your families enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend celebrating and remembering the many mothers who have touched so many lives.

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Their hard work and focus are truly appreciated!  You can learn more about FCPS testing here.

Details for the race and registration are linked here

The Raccoon Run is an annual run sponsored by Mantua's Kids Care Club that raises money for Life With Cancer, an amazing INOVA Hospital program that helps to provide support to those living with cancer and their families. This is done through education, information, counseling, and other services, all free of charge. Kids Care Club is a PTA volunteer-run service club that allows children in grades K-6 to give back to their community. Through this race, the kids see their work put into action as the race comes together and raises money for such an amazing cause. This way we are not only helping the amazing organization that Life with Cancer is, but we are also empowering our young people to develop a love of giving back to their community.

In addition, this run honors the memory of a beloved Mantua Elementary School teacher, Mrs. Roberta Romano, who lost her battle with cancer in December of 2001. For over 20 years, this run has been held to honor her memory!

Positivity Project (P2)

This upcoming week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Leadership. Leadership means you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best.

Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

For individuals, leadership is a way to achieve what you know is important, as groups of people invariably achieve more than individuals. If you want to achieve your vision for the future, you need to inspire others to join you. As an individual’s ability to lead develops, so does that person’s confidence and sense of self-efficacy.

To practice and encourage the character strength of leadership with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families English, Spanish (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

The format and timing of state assessments vary by grade level and content area, as noted in the table below. These include:

Tdap, Meningococcal (MenACWY) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Immunization Packet for Rising Seventh Grade Students

As required by the Code of Virginia, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive specific immunizations (Tdap, MenACWY, HPV) prior to the beginning of the school year.

Effective July 1, 2021, a complete series of two doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV)  is required for all students entering seventh grade. The first dose shall be administered before the student enters the seventh grade. Parents/guardians, at their sole discretion, may elect for their student not to receive the HPV immunization.

Virginia state law requires the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to provide the parents and/or guardians of all rising seventh grade students with information on human papillomavirus (HPV) and the human papillomavirus vaccine. The human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) prevents six types of cancer, including cervical cancer and certain head and neck cancers. Boys and girls should receive the vaccine when they are 11-12 years old.

Annually, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Commissioner of Health provide immunization requirement information, to include the HPV vaccine, to rising 7th graders.  For SY 23-24, the VDH provided the following packets which can be found on the School Health Services Hub page:

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Mantua is going green!  We celebrated Earth Week last week with various themed days, dressing in vibrant colors to raise awareness on climate change, water conservation and wildlife survival.  Small differences in daily habits can amass big changes!  FCPS is supporting efforts to “go green” with more eco-friendly paper products in cafeterias, increased efforts in reusing and recycling, and with the implementation of composting. Our 6th grade classes have taken the lead in this initiative with our brand-new composting bins!

Our calendar is filled with student performances! Last Thursday, our 5th and 6th-grade band students delivered an outstanding spring performance. Additionally, on Saturday, several of Mantua's 6th graders showcased their talents beautifully at the All County Chorus Concert, captivating the audience of dignitaries and families alike. Check out for details on upcoming student concerts and performances below.

Our Mantua Reading Fundraiser Challenge wrapped up on Friday.  It has been rewarding to watch students immerse themselves in reading!  We want to make a humble correction from last week’s newsletter: while our librarians ARE fabulous, they were not the creators of the donut sprinkle progress visuals, as previously reported.  PTA parents Elizabeth Frischmann and Emily Chesnes made the donut charts and have been updating them daily throughout the challenge.  Our Mantua PTA volunteers give so much time and energy toward making Mantua great, and we don’t want their efforts to go unrecognized!  Many thanks to all of our Mantua PTA families for their exceptional work and unwavering support of Mantua!

Friday, May 3 is Lunch Hero Day!  While this recognition day falls on a Teacher Work Day this year, we want to spotlight our Mantua cafeteria workers! Between preparing healthy meals for Mantua’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Karen Ray and her fabulous staff earn the hero badge every day.

We want to remind families that Friday, May 3, is Orthodox Good Friday and also a teacher workday.  Millions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday, also known as “Great Friday.” There will be no school for students on Friday.  School will resume on Monday, May 6.

We’ve shared some exciting pictures with you below.  You can keep up with all things Mantua by following us on Instagram!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Mantua News Reminder: Parent / Caregiver Input

It is hard to believe that we are already planning for the 2024-25 school year!  We are excited to work with our teacher teams to plan to best support all students in the upcoming year.  Your input is an important part of this process. Taken together with teacher input and student services, your feedback will be included in the class placement process. We respectfully ask that you refrain from citing a specific teacher by name. The information you provide will be shared with your child's current year's teacher teams as they work on the placement process and will be provided to next year's teacher to best support the transition.  Please complete the linked Input form to provide your input.

If you're providing input for multiple children, please fill out one form for each child.

Submissions are due May 1, 2024. They must be on time to be considered, as our staff will use this input as they form student groups the following week.

Positivity Project (P2)

This upcoming week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm means you approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.

Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups. Those who demonstrate enthusiasm bring an energy and level of intensity to individual and group work. These people are often identified as early leaders and innovators as a result of their outward excitement about a task or project. Look for these people to recruit new group members and generate ideas.

For groups, enthusiasm can be directly tied to high levels of success, happiness, and achievement. Enthusiasm is contagious. One person’s enthusiasm can spark others to think, speak, and act with more energy and conviction. Groups that are enthusiastic about tasks are much more likely to spend longer periods of time in service to the group’s overall goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of enthusiasm with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) (English, Spanish), where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Our Mantua students are reading their way through the Read-a-Thon challenge!  Our fabulous librarians created a “donut” progress chart to track student reading by grade level–we can’t wait to watch those sprinkles accumulate!  As a reminder, reading takes a myriad of forms, and every student can participate, no matter what their reading level.  Let’s cover those donuts in sprinkles!

Our 3rd-grade students explored the Museum of Natural History this week, delving into the mystery of human origins, the intricacies of the insect zoo, and the beauty of the Butterfly Pavilion.  Many students were able to showcase their artistic talents at the Woodson Pyramid Art Show on Tuesday evening! Mantua beamed with pride and excitement as families admired the inspiring pieces. Lastly, we share some photos from our amazing Literacy and Math Night!

We welcomed some incoming students to Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday!  Our new friends immersed themselves in creative crafts and engaging classroom activities while parents and caregivers took the opportunity to connect with administrators and staff. Do you need to register a kindergarten student or have questions about the process?  Mergie Kakouris, our Mantua registrar ([email protected] ), will happily answer questions and assist you with registration.  We are thrilled to welcome new faces to our Mantua community!

On Wednesday, April 24th, we celebrate Administrative Professionals Day.  We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated main office staff for their invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment to our students, parents, and community."

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the upcoming dates and events listed below.  Our 4th-6th graders are practicing diligently for their respective spring concerts, and we are excitedly anticipating the Mantua PTA drama performance of Aristocats!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Positivity Project (P2)

This upcoming week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. Appreciation of beauty and excellence means you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. You don’t take things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy what is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness on which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, a song, or a building); exceptional skill or talent, and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. These feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Appreciating excellence and beauty helps individuals experience positive emotions and connect to the world around them. It’s an outward-facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside their head. And not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing them to forget anxieties and troubles. And it is associated with other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.

To practice and encourage the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) (English, Spanish) where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions

Tdap, Meningococcal (MenACWY) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Immunization Packet for Rising Seventh Grade Students

Friday, April 26, 2024

Passover and Half-O Days

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete school year calendar.

Theravada New Year (O Day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration. Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

  Mantua News Positivity Project (P2)

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Purpose. Purpose means having beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

Purpose gives individuals the sense that they are put on this earth for a reason and that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe. People who possess a sense of purpose believe that they were put on earth for a reason. That reason can have all kinds of variety. It could be to create a unique invention, bring joy through art or music, or raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.

Having a clear sense of purpose in life and believing that you’re connected to a larger meaning gives individuals strength. It allows them to persevere and find courage in trying circumstances or lead with kindness and love even when it’s not reciprocated. Those with a sense of purpose have more meaning in their life -- and are more fulfilled.

To practice and encourage the character strength of purpose with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), (English, Spanish), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Mantua Read-a-thon

It’s time to take out those books and read, read, read!  Our fundraising Read-a-thon will begin on April 15 and run through April 26th, and we want to encourage everyone to participate in the fun!  Information on how to log your student’s reading hours, etc., will be distributed by the Mantua PTA.  Remember that ANY reading counts!  Reading aloud to your child counts as well.  This is a great way to encourage and celebrate reading as well as raise funds for Mantua.

Woodson Pyramid Art Shows

The Woodson High School Fine Arts Department is excited to invite the Woodson community to our annual art shows!

The Pyramid Art Show, which includes work from our elementary, middle, and high school students, opens on Tuesday, April 16. We will have a reception from 6-8pm in Cav Hall. Come on by to see what our K-11 artists have created this year!

On Thursday, April 18 from 6-8pm we will be celebrating our senior students at the Senior Art Show - our seniors’ culminating shows! Our upper-level senior artists have curated collections of their finest works and are looking forward to sharing this work with their families, friends, and community. We are so proud of our students and excited for them to have this special opportunity to share their work.

In between enjoying the artwork at both shows, visitors can bring home small, student-made artworks that will be for sale and bid on our famous hand-painted furniture.

Our students have worked so hard to hone their art-making skills and create these works. They (and we!) would be so honored to welcome you to one (or both!) of these events.

Solar Eclipse Glasses

Are you wondering what to do with your solar eclipse glasses? Recycling the solar eclipse glasses by donating them to Mrs. Sperapani's class for redistribution to children in Latin America is a wonderful way to promote recycling and sustainability, but it also allows children in other parts of the world to experience the awe and wonder of a solar eclipse. It's heartwarming to see such thoughtfulness in action.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Our first week returning from Spring Break was a successful one, and we are looking forward to so many exciting events at Mantua!  Our 4th grade classes saw aquatic life in action at the Baltimore Aquarium on Friday, and our 5th grade classes will be visiting Hemlock Overlook Park on April 15 and 17, where they will explore forests and streams and the wildlife that inhabits those biomes. We will be sure to include photos in our next message.

We are also anticipating the start of the Mantua Book Fair!  The Book Fair begins April 9th, and our fabulous library staff have included additional fair hours so that everyone can take advantage of the book fair. April is National Library Month as well; thanks to our wonderful library staff, Katie Marmol and Avril Donat, for their tremendous contributions to our learning! You can review the Book Fair details and schedule below.

We want to remind families about our upcoming Family Literacy and Math Night!  This event will be held at Mantua on Thursday, April 11, from 6:30-8 PM.  We have a variety of fun activities planned for students and we welcome all families to attend.

Tomorrow, April 8, many parts of the United States will experience a solar eclipse. This degree of eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it does come with some safety reminders.  Our staff is prepared with additional safety precautions for the afternoon, and our very generous PTA has provided approved solar safety eyewear to help us navigate this event at Mantua.  Please review the reminders we have listed below with your student. The most important message to share is not to look up unless you wear protective glasses.  Younger students are being told not to look up at all.

Movement Mondays is back!  Beginning Monday, April 8, all are welcome to join us on the Mantua track as we begin our week with exercise and fun with friends.  Movement on Mondays will continue, weather permitting, through June 7th.

This month we celebrate National Arab Heritage Month and Muslim American Heritage Month!  This is a time to recognize the history and numerous contributions that Arab Americans and Muslim Americans bring to our community.  You can read more about the history and culture of Arab Americans and Muslim Americans by following the links provided below.

We honor those who celebrate Eid- al- Fitr on April 9th and 10th. In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan.  This is a celebratory time that begins at sundown on April 9 for those who have observed Ramadan, and we want to remind families that April 10th is a school holiday, and schools and offices will be closed.  Classes will resume on Thursday, April 11th.

We wish you a wonderful rest of your week!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Rich Deixler, Assistant Principal

Colleen Vaughan, Assistant Principal

Mantua News: Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A solar eclipse is happening tomorrow, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Mantua, the PTA has provided approved eyewear for all students and staff to view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.  Our staff has been informed of the safety measures we have planned for Monday afternoon.  If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the front office. Please review our previous messaging sent through e-Notify, as well as the reminders below.

Reminders to share with your student:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.  Only grades 3-6 will be permitted the opportunity of a supervised viewing with the use of the approved safety glasses.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange to pick your child up before 2 PM.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

As we finish out the third quarter of the year, we want to take a moment to celebrate the progress and personal milestones of each student at Mantua.  It is rewarding to see students meet challenges and learn to excel in areas they didn’t think possible.  We also love to see students embrace the concepts we have been learning through the Positivity Project and incorporate those character qualities into the classroom.  We can’t wait to see the progress we make as we close out the year!  Today, we’ve shared some photos of classroom activities as well as some from Spirit Week.  Enjoy!

April 1-5 is recognized nationally as Assistant Principals Week.  We want to extend our immense appreciation for the incredible work done by our own Assistant Principals, Rich Deixler and Colleen Vaughan.  Their tireless efforts make a difference each day at Mantua.  Their commitment to excellence shines through in every aspect of their work, from supporting teachers and staff to ensuring the well-being and success of each and every student. Let's take a moment to express our sincerest thanks to our Assistant Principals for all they do to make our school a place where every child can thrive and grow.

As a reminder, March 25-29 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. We wish our students and staff a happy and restful Spring Break! See the complete school year calendar.

  Student Testing at Mantua

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards. Please see the following table for the specific SOL assessments your child will take and the dates on which these will occur. Please do your best to avoid scheduling appointments on the days your child has an assessment.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Many of our classes have been enjoying outings to extend their learning.  Last week, our 2nd grade classes visited Frying Pan Farm Park.  Students viewed a working farm as it functioned in the early 1900’s, with tractors, farm animals, corn cribs, and even a blacksmith shop!  Our 6th graders visited the Fairfax Water Treatment Plant, where students learned about the water treatment process used to ensure safe, drinkable water here in Fairfax County.  They toured the water pools being treated and learned the science of the process with an expert.  We also continue to celebrate music and art in the month of March.  We’ve included some photos below.

One thing that makes Mantua special is how we embrace our work as life-long learners.  We ensure opportunities to develop our craft and expand our professional knowledge.  One exciting way to do this is through colleague visits.  This week and last were our “Welcome Weeks,” where staff visited the classrooms of colleagues.  Through these observations, they have been able to see the great learning happening in different age groups, contents, and specials.   Our fantastic PTA has made this activity even more exciting by hosting a coffee and a generous raffle giveaway!  When we create a staff culture of collaboration, we create a community of excellence.  Thank you to all who made this event possible!

Mantua has designated this week as Spirit Week, celebrating the approach of Spring Break week!  We have included a schedule below.  We know that many families plan vacations and other activities during Spring Break week.  We want to gently remind you of the importance of regular school attendance.  Effective learning builds on itself, and continuity is critical to this effort. We understand that absences do happen.  Please remember to alert the front office staff through Pick Up Patrol if your student will be absent or tardy.

We hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact Principal Shannon, [email protected], or the front office staff regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation, silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.  We strive to make sure that every student feels valued and respected, and we will make every effort to assist your students with their specific needs.

New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on managing requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are designated for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact Principal Shannon or Luis Uribe-Gamboa, our Family Liaison, regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Preventing Measles

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

Fairfax County’s Funding of the FCPS Budget

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from fiscal years (FY) 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in FY 2024. The County’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements.

If the county were to return to transferring 52.6% to FCPS for the upcoming year, that would equate to $63 million more to invest in excellence.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

March is nationally recognized as Women’s History Month, a time when we honor women's invaluable contributions to American society.  This year, we focus on women advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion. We seize these opportunities in our classrooms to delve into the diverse fabric of our communities.  We eagerly await to hear about the engaging activities our classrooms will undertake this month! Additionally, we celebrate Art in our Schools month during March, when we showcase our students' artistic talents through various music and drama performances. Keep an eye out for these events!

What a joyous and successful Heritage Night event we had last week! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the families who participated and to our dedicated family liaison, Luis Uribe-Gamboa, for his tireless efforts in making this event a resounding success. The gym was full of festivity, families, and staff members, creating a memorable evening!

We want to recognize all our community members who observe Ramadan, the most sacred month of the year in Islam. The first full day of observance is today, March 11. We’ve included a link below to learn more about Ramadan. We anticipate that some students may need accommodation during this time, and we encourage you to let your child’s teacher know and reach out to the front office for any specific needs.

As we transition into Daylight Savings Time this week, it's crucial to remember that it will be darker when students wait for school buses.  We urge everyone to prioritize safety during this time, ensuring our students are visible and protected.

Have a wonderful week!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Mantua News

Positivity Project (P2) (English, Spanish),

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others. It’s important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others’ character strengths.

Identifying and appreciating the good in others is a core tenet of the Other People Mindset. This isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems -- for ourselves, for the other person, and for our relationships.

Identifying and appreciating the good in other people helps you see the world through a more positive -- and less threatening -- lens. If you’re constantly seeing the negative traits of people, you’re going to think the world is comprised of bad people -- and you’re going to operate from a defensive posture. This isn’t to say that we should be naive or see the world and its people through “rose-colored glasses.” It’s just that we should strive to understand people’s intent. If you see the good in another, they are likely to see the good in you.

Ramadan

Today is the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days; however, tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Bipartisan Study Finds Virginia Public School Divisions Receive Less Funding per Student Than Other States

The School Board recently adopted FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget. Meeting budget needs becomes more of a challenge with underfunding by the state, using staffing formulas that continue to result in school districts not receiving the actual support needed for excellent public education. A staffing formula is the method for calculating the number of positions that need to be assigned to meet program needs.

Did You Know?

In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky. Learn more about the JLARC study. View FCPS’ budget development timeline

Contact your state officials to provide feedback on funding for K-12 education.

New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are designated for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact Principal Shannon or Luis Uribe-Gamboa, our Family Liaison regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Please contact [email protected] if you have questions.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together, as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services and American Sign Language accommodation are available. Childcare and transportation will also be provided as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives, including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process

We encourage every student to participate in the festivities and also to curl up with a good book!

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

The past 2 weeks have been full of celebrations at Mantua!  This week, we honored our American presidents, past and present, and their legacy and impact on our society by celebrating President’s Day!  While this past Monday was a federal holiday, our students celebrated early by learning about our past presidents and, in particular, facts about George Washington.  Our classrooms were also a blur of pink and red last week as we celebrated Valentine’s Day with classroom parties and Valentine cards for friends and teachers.  We appreciate the family members who volunteered to help make these classroom celebrations successful.  We’ve shared some colorful pictures with you!

We also celebrated our dedicated bus drivers for Bus Driver Appreciation Day last week!  Our bus drivers are a front line of safety and care every day as they transport students between school and home, always with a smile and a friendly wave. We took the opportunity to thank our Mantua bus drivers in person;  we’ve shared some photos on social media, check them out on Instagram!

I wanted to share our continued efforts to help students understand the importance of using kind and positive language. We are committed to providing a learning environment that ensures all members of our school community will be safe, supported, and valued.   Last week, our 6th graders participated in an assembly led by our admin team that reviewed aspects of the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) and addressed the impact of harmful language and behaviors.  This was an incredibly positive experience for all involved.  We were impressed by our students' meaningful participation, offering ways they can serve as upstanders and instances where the words and actions of others have impacted them. We will continue this work with our 4th and 5th grade students in the near future. As with our 6th grade families, we will communicate upcoming assemblies with grade-level families.

We are excited for Heritage Night on March 6 at Mantua.  A reminder of the details of this event will come home in Tuesday folders; you can also find information below.  We need many volunteers to make this night successful; please consider signing up! You won’t want to miss this exciting evening celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes up our Mantua family!

We hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Positivity Project (P2)

This upcoming week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.

Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love of learning with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2)(English, Spanish), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

Mantua was a hub of excitement this past week!  Our Kindergarten classes celebrated the 100th day of school with “100th day” trail mix, building with 100 cups, and making “I’m 100 days smarter” celebratory hats!  Our first graders made 100th-day posters and used the number 100 in their math projects.  The year is flying by, and we are grateful for the many successes this year has brought us already. Last week, many of our classrooms and students celebrated the Lunar New Year.  This holiday marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is traditionally used in many East Asian countries and is one of the year's most important holidays. The Lunar New Year is about ushering in luck and prosperity with family, and we were fortunate to celebrate with many of our families!

We also hosted several local news stations as they interviewed Paul Malc, a Mantua 6th-grade teacher! Mr. Malc shared about his former career as a statistician for the Green Bay Packers and how he can incorporate his background in statistics into his math lessons.  He gave a short lesson to his students about Sunday’s Superbowl game and some plays to look for, based on statistical probability.  This is one example of the many ways our Mantua teachers use their diverse backgrounds, interests, and passions to bring a depth of knowledge to the classroom daily!

Registration has opened for FCPS summer camps and other learning opportunities! Below is more information and a link to the registration. These are excellent opportunities for your student to experience learning all summer long!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, our P2 focus for this week is Love.  Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.  We’ve included some of the information we’ll review with your student below.

This is a friendly reminder that all schools and offices will be closed for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 19. Learn more about Presidents Day at Britannica.com. Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 20.  Enjoy the long weekend!

Have a great rest of your week!

Take good care,

Linda Shannon, Principal

Positivity Project (P2)

This week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person comforts and makes the other feel safe, sacrifices on the other’s behalf, supports the other during struggles, and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

On a group level, love is vital for the well-being of society. The world is endlessly interconnected. We are all dependent upon each other for survival and happiness. Love produces positive feelings, which help negate loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Without love, we cannot form strong relationships with our families, friends, or communities. A world without love is a dangerous world.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

  Heritage Night at Mantua

We need many participants to make this evening a success.  Please consider hosting a table or just joining in on the fun!  Details and a sign-up sheet were distributed in Tuesday folders.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

This week is National School Counseling Week, a time to recognize the incredible impact our school counselors have on our student body.  We want to thank Richard Hang and Susan Song for their care and commitment to every student and their efforts to help them reach their full potential.  Our students love starting and ending each day with a greeting from them! Positivity Project (P2)

This week, our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.

Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

But making a commitment towards cheering on other people’s successes can be a great way to improve our own health, happiness, and relationships. People can take active steps to be more genuinely happy for the achievements of others. Ways to do this include telling others about the success of your modest friend, noticing when your reaction to a sibling’s success is envy or jealousy -- and asking yourself why that is, reminding yourself that appreciating the excellence in another is a character strength, and asking your successful teammates and classmates what they do to prepare for games or tests.

Being supportive of people who succeed is good for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being and when people cheer each other on it begins a reciprocal process that forges stronger relationships. Those relationships are the foundation for a strong culture in teams, schools, and businesses.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), (English, Spanish), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and discuss the answers to three questions.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua families,

This week our 6th grade students had the opportunity to visit Woodson High School and explore space in the Woodson planetarium! Students were able to view and study both northern and southern hemisphere constellations and learn about our solar system as part of their science curriculum. We also enjoyed the musical sounds of our 5th and 6th grade band students as they performed in their winter concert last week!

As we move into February, we look forward to celebrating Black History Month.  This is a time to recognize the deep struggles that African Americans have faced throughout history as well as their tremendous achievements and contributions to society.  We will take a deeper dive into African American history in our classrooms this month and we invite families to engage with their students about what they’re learning!

Our entire staff works very hard to make Mantua a place of meaningful learning. Please keep scrolling to view a special announcement from our assistant admin team!

Take good care,

Mantua News Positivity Project (P2)

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Forgiveness.  Forgiveness means you forgive those who have done wrong and you accept that people make mistakes.

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective.

The ability to reconcile differences and move forward positively is a trait of any effective group. When people work together, conflict is inevitable. However, when people value each other’s contribution and believe in the group’s goal, they become more capable of moving past conflict toward genuinely positive behavior. A group member’s willingness to forgive imperfections of both other members and the group as a whole contribute to overall success.

After-School Enrichment Opportunity

Our after-school enrichment program has been running for over 10 years and averages over 500 student registrations yearly.  This program and others like it at Mantua cannot exist without our amazing parent volunteers.  The current volunteer for the program is aging out of Mantua, and the PTA is still searching for someone to take over the reins of this wonderful program that serves so many of our student population.  Please consider volunteering for this important role in the PTA to save our enrichment program so that future students can benefit!  Please email Heather Hill at [email protected] for more information; she would like to have the new coordinator shadow her during the Spring planning, which begins in January, in order to ensure a successful 2024-2025 program launch.

Snow Days

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Elementary school instruction: Red Apple 21.

Middle school instruction: Channel 25.

High school instruction: Channel 99.

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Free Resources for Families

Did you know that caregivers can access free webinars, confidential consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities?
