Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear families,

As we begin the second half of the school year, I know many of us are carrying a heavy heart. The recent tragedy in Washington, D.C. has affected us all, and I want to acknowledge the sadness and grief that many in our community are experiencing. It's during these difficult times that we must lean on each other for support. Please know that our school community is here to support your students in any way that we can.
Even amidst sorrow, we must continue to nurture hope and look forward. We have an exciting semester ahead, filled with opportunities for learning and growth.

Take good care,
Ms. Shannon, Ms. Vaughan, and Mr. Webster

Message from Ms. Shannon

What a treat it was to hear the musical talents of our 5th and 6th-grade band students on Thursday evening! They were fantastic! We're already looking forward to more wonderful performances from our strings and choral students in the coming weeks. A huge thank you to all the parents and families for your incredible support in helping your children shine both academically and artistically! While we were disappointed to see the Commander’s season come to an end last night, they gave us an exciting season! On a brighter note, we're so excited to finally see some warmer weather this week after a few chilly weeks! Looking ahead, some of our rising 7th graders will be visiting Frost Middle School for a sneak peek at middle school life! And don't forget, Luther Jackson will be hosting a curriculum night for rising 7th graders planning to attend LJMS on January 30th.  Mark your calendars for 7th graders' transition activities.

Please be on the lookout for our survey for the next Early Release Monday, taking place on February 10.  This survey communicates changes to your child’s dismissal schedule.  Please fill out the survey ONLY if you have plan changes.  If you have questions about Early Release Mondays or your child’s schedule, please reach out to Susan Palomino at [email protected].

Take good care,

Ms. Shannon, Mrs. Vaughan, and Mr. Webster

The Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means understanding other people's thoughts and feelings and why they act the way they do.

Social intelligence helps us build good relationships by being aware of others’ emotions and behaviors. It is different from "book smarts" and grows with experience. It also allows people to connect, form friendships, and protect themselves from being taken advantage of. It also helps us read facial expressions and understand what motivates others.

To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua Families,

We hope you are keeping warm on this winter day and enjoying the day off in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s tremendous contributions to society and recognition of today's Inauguration.

We were so impressed by how smoothly our amazing students adjusted to returning to the classroom this week! They were even champs about having indoor recess. Thankfully, the warmer weather on Friday let us get back outside for some fresh air and fun. To ensure our students stay warm and comfortable while enjoying outdoor activities like recess and PE, please remember to send them to school with a warm coat, hat, gloves, and other appropriate cold-weather gear. We closely monitor weather conditions, including low temperatures, wind chill advisories, and warnings, to determine if outdoor activities need to be adjusted for student safety and well-being.

In the week ahead, we will have the opportunity to hear our band students perform their winter concert on January 23rd, beginning at 6:30 PM.  Our students have worked diligently to prepare for this event, and we look forward to hearing their musical talents! Students at all grade levels are participating in iReady assessments which are valuable tools for understanding student progress.  Reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions about testing.

Finally, mark your calendars for our upcoming Math and Literacy Night!  This event will be held on February 6, beginning at 6 PM.  This is a wonderful chance to participate in interactive learning activities as a family!  See the flyer below.

Take good care,

Ms. Shannon, Mrs. Vaughan, and Mr. Webster

Mantua PTA Wish Fund

We have extended the deadline to submit an application for the PTA Wish Fund.  The new date is, tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21st at 5 PM.

The generous support of Mantua ES families, community supporters, faculty, and staff enables us to operate the Mantua PTA Wish Fund, an internal grant-awarding program founded in 2014.

This grant is designed to fund valuable projects that benefit our school. A few of the past awarded projects are the outside track, installed refillable water stations, balls and equipment for recess, snap circuits for science classes, and supplies for the Garden Committee.

Please check out the PTA Wish Fund website for more information.

The Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Perseverance. Perseverance means completing what you start despite obstacles. It means never giving up.

People who show perseverance keep trying, even when they face challenges. They stay focused on their goals and work hard, even when things don't go as planned. Those who persevere often achieve great things because they don't quit. They also learn a lot and get better at what they do.

Perseverance can also inspire others. When one person in a group keeps going despite setbacks, it can motivate the whole team to keep trying and reach their goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perseverance at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Parents and Community,

We were so excited to welcome back our students for a short day on Friday and an early start today!  We hope everyone has enjoyed the snow and the time off.

I want to thank our incredible custodial team, who worked tirelessly to clean and salt our grounds over 3 days. I have worked in many schools and through several snowstorms, and I have never seen grounds so meticulously cleared of snow.  This was no small task, given our expansive multi-level campus!

I also want to congratulate our exceptional Reading Specialist, Amanda Bontzos, on being selected as the Woodson Pyramid Outstanding Professional Employee. She was selected by the pyramid panel based on the nominations submitted by colleagues and families, who spoke to her extensive knowledge, deep level of care, and gracious efforts always to support teachers and students.  Her nomination will now be considered at the regional level.  Congrats, Mrs. Bontzos. We are so proud of you!

Please note that there will be no Early Release Monday in the month of January.  The next Early Release Monday will be February 10.  Also of note, the Woodson Area Chorus Day has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 22nd.  Please contact Anita Aberle at [email protected] for updated information on this event.

Stay warm this week!

Take good care,

Ms. Shannon, Mrs. Vaughan, and Mr. Webster

The Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Prudence. Prudence means you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.

Prudence is about doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. It's a way of thinking ahead, setting goals, making plans, and having the discipline to follow through. It’s more about using your head than your heart.

Prudence helps with managing yourself effectively. Whether aiming for a sports record, getting good grades, or saving for something special, you need to plan ahead and stay focused. Even with a plan, you must resist temptations that might distract you. Prudence gives you the wisdom to use the right strengths at the right time to achieve your goals.

The Positivity Project

This coming week, our school will focus on the character strength of Optimism. Optimism means that you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

Optimistic people have hope and confidence about the future. They believe good things will come and stay positive even when faced with challenges. They turn obstacles into steps toward their goals.

Optimism isn't just seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. It's about focusing on the good in any situation, staying open to opportunities, and managing emotions. Optimistic people make great leaders and can inspire others with their positive outlook and ability to find meaning in difficult times.

To practice and encourage the character strength of optimism at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Kids Care Club Food Drive  The Positivity Project

This coming week, our school will focus on the character strength of Self-Control. Self-control means having the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.

Having self-control helps people stay calm during tough times and avoid impulsive actions. It doesn’t mean you don’t have thoughts or feelings; it means you can manage them.

When working or gathering in groups, self-control is shown through “self-monitoring.” This means being honest about what works and what doesn’t. Group members adjust their roles to help the group succeed.

To practice and encourage the character strength of self-control at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Dear Mantua Families,

I am writing to share some exciting news and to express our sincere gratitude.

Our beloved Assistant Principal, Mr. Rich Deixler, has been named the new Assistant Principal at Frost Middle School, effective January 6, 2025.

Mr. Deixler has been an integral part of the Mantua community for the past 13 years, first as a dedicated 5th-grade teacher and then as a supportive and collaborative Assistant Principal. He has been a true partner in all aspects of school life, from enhancing our academic programs to fostering a warm and welcoming school climate.

Mr. Deixler's remarkable ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff has been a cornerstone of his success at Mantua. His deep understanding of our school and his unwavering commitment to our students have made a lasting impact on our community.

Dear Mantua School Community,

As I embark on a new chapter in my career, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the past 12 years. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this wonderful school community.

From my early days as a teacher to my time as Assistant Principal, I've been consistently inspired by the dedication and passion of our staff, students, and families. Your unwavering support has made a significant impact on my professional growth and personal development.

I'm excited to announce that I will be joining Frost Middle School as Assistant Principal, effective January 6, 2025. While I'm sad to be leaving Mantua, I'm thrilled about this new opportunity to continue serving our community. Frost Middle School is an integral part of our district's pyramid, and by joining their team, I'll still be able to collaborate with many of the talented educators and support staff I've come to know and admire.

I'm confident that my experience at Mantua has prepared me well for this next step in my career. I'm grateful for the lessons I've learned and the relationships I've built, and I look forward to carrying those forward as I transition to Frost Middle School.

With heartfelt thanks,

Rich Deixler

The Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

The Positivity Project

Over the next few days, our school community will continue to focus on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means being aware of and grateful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is about feeling and showing thankfulness. It helps us see the good in others and in the world. People with gratitude are ready to appreciate and return kindness. Expert Robert Emmons says gratitude strengthens relationships because it makes us recognize how others support us.

Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is linked to more energy, empathy, happiness, and optimism. The good news is that gratitude can be practiced and strengthened like a muscle. The more we practice it, the more benefits we get.

To practice and encourage this strength at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

FCPS News Boundary Review Community Meeting on Monday, December 2, at 6:30 PM

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Monday, December 2, 6:30-8 p.m., at Westfield High School Cafeteria

Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available.  If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage.

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Hello Mantua Families,

We hope you've had a wonderful week!

Just a quick reminder that Monday, November 18th is an early dismissal day. School will end at 1:05 PM.  If you have changes to your child’s dismissal plan, please complete the linked form. This is a CHANGE ONLY communication. If your plans remain the same, no further action is needed.

As the holiday season approaches, please remember the importance of consistent attendance. In-person learning is the best way for our students to learn and grow.

Have a great weekend!

Take good care,

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Today: Mantua Gardens Annual Fall Clean-Up

Greetings, Friends of the Mantua Gardens! Autumn is here, and along with the chillier temperatures and changing leaf colors comes a transition in the gardens.

As always, it's time to prepare our green spaces for winter rest, and this year’s clean-up event will be held today, from 1 to 3 PM, beginning in the Discovery Garden beds above the playground.

We will be cutting plants back, weeding, edging around the seating area, and refreshing the mulch. We will also be planting some bulbs that will greet families with a pretty display in the early days of spring. We will be clearing out the old vegetable plants from the Learning Garden beds next to the white tent.

We welcome gardeners of all ability levels to join us as it’s a great way to get hands-on experience and learn more about plant and vegetable gardening and our native plants. Children (with parents) are always encouraged to join in. Bulb planting is especially fun!

If you enjoy being outside on a lovely fall day, I hope you and your family will join us for as long as you can on Sunday, November 10.

If you would like more details or have any questions, please contact Garden Committee Chair, Karin Hudson, at [email protected] and check out our Facebook page: Mantua ES Garden Committee & Volunteers!

The Positivity Project

This upcoming week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Bravery. Bravery means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength, even when you know things are difficult or scary.

Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness but instead the overcoming of fear.

Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. For example, some people with social anxiety are brave just by leaving their houses and talking with people. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears, such as swimming or playing a sport. And, on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.

To practice and encourage the character strength of bravery at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

FCPS NEWS Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present and how tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development. If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Message from Ms. Shannon

Dear Mantua Families,

What a fantastic week it's been at Mantua!

Our Run for Rocky was a huge success, thanks to the incredible efforts of Emily Chesnes, the PTA, and all our dedicated volunteers. The funds raised will directly benefit our classrooms and enhance student learning. We’re incredibly grateful for your support!

And don't forget about our Book Fair today, Saturday, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Come enjoy books, food trucks, and more in our school library.

As we wrap up the first quarter, we're excited to celebrate with our annual Spirit Parade on Thursday, October 31st. Students are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character or in their grade-level theme. Students are welcome to wear costumes (no masks or toy weapons, please) or show their Mantua spirit with our school colors. Families are welcome to join us for the fun!

Please note that Friday, November 1st, is a holiday in observance of Diwali, Día de los Muertos, and All Saints' Day. Schools and offices will be closed. Additionally, Monday, November 4th, is a school planning day, and Tuesday, November 5th, is a teacher workday. See the complete school year calendar.

Feature Friday

Sending out a huge thank you to our Spirit Squad for a fantastic first Feature Friday. Staff were recognized with a sign outside of their classroom, pictures posted on Mantua's Instagram, and a Google form solicited positive notes from staff and the community to share with them. This week's featured staff were our Preschool team: Katie Yates, Diana Grace, Eman Moharram, and Nora Omar, and Kindergarten staff—Andrea Britton and Alexis Macedo. Our next Feature Friday will be the week of November 8.

The Positivity Project

This upcoming week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Knowing That My Words and Actions Affect Others, which means having an awareness that everything that we say and do can affect others — and our relationships with them.

Whether we speak, email, text, or post, our words and actions can have a positive or negative effect. The words and actions we choose can lift others up or bring them down, and they also impact us. When we all think carefully about our words and actions and show respect and care for those around us, we create a happier and healthier community.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
